Meat pie tradition demands that we make meat pies with ground beef because it’s soft and quick, but I did it way differently in this meat pie recipe, I use fillet steak, and bacon, both the bacon and steak are soft and delicious.
The dough for the pie is easy to make at home and can be made in advance.
HOW TO MAKE STEAK PIE

Make The Steak Pie Filling
Use a kitchen knife to cut beef fillets into small cubes, and bacon into small portions. Set aside.
chop the onion, cloves of garlic, and bell pepper. Make sure they are finely chopped to avoid giant chunks of vegetables.
Use a peeler to peel a potato, and cut it into small cubes using a kitchen knife.
Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat and drizzle in the oil.
Once the skillet is hot, add steak and fry until cooked add bacon and fry together.
Add peas, green beans and carrots, and fry for 2 minutes whilst continuously stirring with a wooden spatula. I know you must be wondering why peas and carrots are fried without being cooked, but it’s okay to fry them minus cooking them, it’s okay if they don’t get very tender, they’ll eventfully be soft as you bake the pies.
Add onion and garlic, and fry till they become transparent. Sprinkle with garlic powder, herb spice, rosemary spice.
Season with salt and black pepper.
Thicken with fresh cream, a bit of black pepper, and a squeeze of lemon. If you do not have fresh cream then use flour. although I would like to mention that it’s not necessary to thicken the filling.
Make The Pastry Dough
Put 2 cups of flour, a pinch of salt, and instant yeast in a mixing bowl. I lope using all-purpose flour for all my pie recipes, a substitute for AP flour is wheat flour. You can mix wheat flour and all-purpose flour, they pair well.
Mix the dry ingredients with a wooden spoon. add half a cup of milk and continue to mix. At this point you can use your hands to mix, I like applying oil on my hands so that flour doesn’t stick on my hands.
I use milk because I wanted my pies to be milky, but you can use ice cold water in place of milk.
Transfer on a board and knead for 3 minutes.
Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise for an hour.
HOMEMADE PIE DOUGH MAKES THE PERFECT CRUST
Making the dough from scratch is simple and quick.
I use a knife to cut the pastry into 12 equal parts. This kind of helps me have equal-sized pies.
roll out with a rolling pin. Use a disc to cut into equal circles. I would love to tell you that I use a 4-inch or 3-inch disc, but the truth is that I don’t know the inches of the disc. whatever just use whatever you have, even a jar lid and pizza cutter work well. the goal is to have perfect steak pies.
After cutting the dough, add a teaspoon or so of filling right in the middle of the disc.
cover the filling with another piece of pastry. Pinch the ends with a fork.
You’ll want to brush the disc with an egg wash, for that perfect golden color.
USE A FORK TO CRIMP AND SEAL THE EDGES
Although some people prefer pinching dough as a way of sealing it, I love to use a fork because it’s the perfect tool for sealing the edges.
Don’t worry if some pies look messy while closing the disc, after baking, the pies will look just good, it doesn’t matter even if there is some spill.
This is a baked meat pie recipe, although I have never had fried meat pies, I hear they are tasty, so you can try it out inside of baking them, and if you have tried out fried pies then I would love to know how they taste.
These steak pies can easily be prepared ahead of time. fill them, seal them then refrigerate for 24 hours or freeze for up to one week.
Bake Time: Baking time vary depending on whether the pies are frozen or they are chilled.
I bake my pies immediately after adding the filling, so they bake for just 35 minutes. But if you freeze them then they bake for 45-50 minutes.

- 1 tablespoon of instant yeast
- ½ Cup Milk
- ¼ kg of bacon
- ½ kg steak
- 1 Onion

- ½ Red pepper
- ½ Green pepper
- 1 medium potato
- 4 Carrots
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 Egg
- 5 tablespoons of fresh cream
- 1 Lemon
- ½ Tablespoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic and herb spice
- 1 teaspoon rosemary
- Cut one small packet of fillet into small cubes. Cut a handful of bacon into small portions. Chop 1 onion, 2 cloves of garlic, and red and green pepper.
- Then cut 1 medium potato into small cubes. Boil the potato in a small pot until cooked but firm.
- Fry the steak until cooked add the bacon and fry together. Add the onion, garlic, red and green pepper then a bit of peas and carrot. Let it fry for 2 minutes then sprinkle some garlic and herb spice, rosemary and salt and pepper. Then add some fresh cream, some additional pepper and a squeeze of lemon. Stir until the mixture slightly thickens.
